SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY STATEMENT ON THE SENATE DEFEAT OF THE GUN IMMUNITY BILL

The National Rifle Association blinked today, but this battle is far from over. The NRA disowned its gun industry immunity bill after the assault weapon ban and gun show provisions were added by the Senate, but we still have an uphill battle to enact these two key reforms into law.

Nevertheless, the Senate's adoption of these amendments today is a welcome step in the right direction, and I intend to do all I can to see that they are enacted into law this year. The American people deserve responsible action by Congress to deal with the massive problem of gun violence in our communities across our country, and the gun industry does not deserve broad legal immunity from accountability that no other industry in America has.
